Five virtual reality (VR) works by Taiwan creators were showcased at Festival der Zukunft July 3-6 in Munich, highlighting the country’s growing influence in digital art.

The participation was made possible through collaboration between the Taipei Representative Office in Germany’s Cultural Division and German media group 1E9 Denkfabrik GmbH. Co-organized by 1E9 and the Deutsches Museum, the annual festival draws over 3,000 global artists, entrepreneurs and media professionals, focusing on artificial intelligence, climate change, quantum technology and future lifestyles.

According to the Ministry of Culture, this marked the first time an Asian country was featured as guest of honor in the event’s extended reality exhibition area, MUNICH Beyond. The ministry said the five featured works explored themes such as social engagement, literature, psychological philosophy and physical immersion.

Among the highlights was “Free UR Head” by Taipei City-based Very Theater, which was also shortlisted at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Another standout was “Limbophobia” by Wen-E Studio Artistic Director Hsieh Wen-yee, presented through 360-degree projection at the museum’s planetarium.

The MOC vowed to continue promoting Taiwan’s digital art in major European cultural centers to enhance the country’s global visibility. (POC-E)
